Yolanda

Yolanda

Yolanda grew up in Chichicastenango in the department of Quiche, in a small home with adobe walls and a dirt floor. She received six years of formal schooling and did agricultural as well as artisan work to help support the family; her hard work allowed her younger siblings to receive more education.

The Artisan’s History
At a very young age, Yolanda discovered her passion for textiles. At age seven, she was already starting to make her own designs. Because she was so young, she was not allowed to use fine threads, so she made her own unique products using what she could find. Her mother taught her to weave on a backstrap loom, and Yolanda continues to use this skill today by weaving scarves, centerpieces, and other products. Her weaving is inspired by nature and the experience of the indigenous Maya community of Guatemala.

The Friendship Bridge Impact
Yolanda's dream was to be able to sell her products throughout the 22 departments of Guatemala as well as outside the country. She has achieved this goal. Since joining Friendship Bridge, she learned her rights as a woman and her self-esteem has increased. Her business has grown to the point where she employs many women from her community on a part-time basis. Since joining Handmade by Friendship Bridge®, she has increased her knowledge of product development, and has learned to combine the colors according to the season for the international market. Through her involvement in another professional organization, she was chosen to travel to Taiwan for a highly competitive spot in an international handicraft exhibition.
